Question : How can we improve the functionality of a Luminaire by design?
Design of a Luminaire with direct/indirect lighting
The Luminaire uses indirect light to light up the ceiling, creating the a plesant atmosphere and ambiance whitout the effects of glare and harsh shadows.
It is also supplemented by direct light to increase the luminosity for scenarios involving intense task
Background
The most common type of room lamps found in most of the homes are made to be cost efficient and are direct lighting. They often have poor quality diffuser and offer bad light ergonomics. They cause glare, have sharp ligthing, cast strong shadows and have poor spread of the light.
The upmarket luminaires diffuse the light and are well designed with quality materials. But most of them have complex manufacturing process and cost nearly 10 times the price of the cheaper common ones found in most homes.
The need for a mid market segment luminaire which offers superior lighting ergonomics and is sensibly designed to suit the taste and needs of cosy home interiors
There are 3 common types of lighting a space
Direct Lighting offers the best illumination of the objects compared to it wattage but has several drawbacks
Indirect lighting has the best ergonomics but falls behind when high illumination is required for important tasks like reading, working
Diffuse light offers in between but it does not cover all the scenarios of lighting
Theory
The Idea is to combine both the direct and indirect lighting with control to change the parameters to adapt to wide range of environments and usage scenarios

Making of the Prototype
The room can also be sufficiently lit using only indirect light
Different lighting scenarios based on the activity
By using the remote or the app on your phone, the intensity and the temperature of the upward and downward light can be controlled independently, thus creating ambiance of the room suiting to any of your activity
Activity : Movie
Up light : 5000K 20% intensity
Down light : 2700K 10% intensity
Activity : Relaxing
Up light : 2700K 80% intensity
Down light : 3500K 20% intensity
